Now that we know what is a service dog, and what role can it have in his human partner's day-to-day activities, let's see what are the best dog breeds for these tasks.

#1 German Shepherd

A popular breed for military and police work, German Shepherds are also frequently chosen for guide and hearing assistance work. Bred specifically to work with humans, they're among the service dog breeds that are easily trained to perform many tasks.

#2 Labrador Retriever

Perceptive and good-natured, labrador retrievers make outstanding service dogs, whether they’re guiding the vision-impaired or alerting a person with diabetes to sugar levels.

#3 Golden Retriever

Bred for work, but they also have their gentle side. Those working skills and gentle nature transfer effectively to service work. Some of their service work requires harmonizing vigilance with calmness, strength with tenderness.

#4 Poodle

The standard poodle is a highly trainable, loyal, and dependable breed. Their low-shedding coat is also a benefit for allergy sufferers. Developed first in Germany for water retrieving, they’re brainy and obedient, as well as suitably sized at about 45 to 70 pounds for service work.

Their innate curiosity and desire for mental stimulation facilitate their work and responsibilities. They’re eager and ready to problem solve as necessary.

#5 Pomeranian

Pomeranian is another breed that you might not traditionally associate with “service dog breeds”, but they’re remarkably enthusiastic and bright small dogs, but they’re brave, sprightly, and self-assured. Their small size may even come in handy. You may see them accompanying their owners in stores, restaurants, or appointments. Some of them may be emotional support dogs, but others are service dogs.
